Beyoncé Applauds Meghan Markle for Her ‘Courage and Leadership’ After Oprah Interview

Beyoncé made it clear she was among the 17 million who watched—and was in awe of—Meghan Markle’s honesty during her interview with Oprah this past Sunday. Queen Bey posted a tribute to Meghan on her site, praising the Duchess of Sussex for speaking her truth and being brave enough to expose how the British royal family and staff failed her during her time as a working senior royal family member.

“Thank you Meghan for your courage and leadership. We are all strengthened and inspired by you,” the singer wrote alongside an image of her and Meghan meeting at The Lion King premiere in 2019.

Meghan spoke honestly in the interview about her extreme struggles with mental health, how the royal family refused to let her seek treatment when she asked, and how some members of the royal family expressed concern over how dark the color of her then-unborn child Archie’s skin would be. The institution refused to let him have a prince title or give him security. There were many more things she and Harry said about the institution, and you can read them here.

Meghan spoke candidly at the end of the interview about her one regret from her experience with the royals. “My regret is believing them when they said I would be protected. I believed that,” she said. “And I regret believing that because I think, had I really seen that that wasn’t happening, I would have been able to do more. But I think I wasn’t supposed to see it. I wasn’t supposed to know. And now we’re actually on the other side, we’ve actually not just survived but are thriving. This? Miracles. I think that all of those things I was hoping for have happened.”

Buckingham Palace released a brief statement yesterday on behalf of the queen. The Palace said:

The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Meghan and Harry.

The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.

Harry, Meghan, and Archie will always be much loved family members.
