Meghan Markle Says Royals Compared Tabloids’ Bullying to Kate’s, But ‘Rude and Racist Aren’t the Same’

In a newly-aired clip from Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s big Oprah interview this morning, Meghan opened up more about how the royal family reacted to how the UK tabloids abused her. They dismissed the UK press’s treatment of Meghan, comparing it to Kate Middleton’s and other members, despite it being fueled by racism. “Rude and racist are not the same,” Meghan put it.

Oprah had asked Meghan and Harry whether they left the royal family because it was just toxic to them or if it was toxic to everyone. She had asked Harry if his brother or father wanted to leave.

“I don’t know,” Harry said of William. “I can’t speak for him, but with that relationship and that control and the fear by the UK tabloids, it’s a really toxic environment. But I will always be there for him; I will always be there for my family as I’ve said I’ve tried to help them to see what has happened.”

Harry said of his father, “He’s had to make peace with it.”

But with Meghan and Harry, it wasn’t just the typical newcomer’s experience. “This was different,” Meghan said.

“Because of the race?” Oprah asked.

“And social media,” Meghan said. “That didn’t exist and so it was like the wild, wild west. It was spread like wildfire, plus my being American, it translated in a different way across the pond. So you had a noise level that was very different. But they can’t see that it’s different.”

“So you felt bullied on an international level,” Oprah said.

“I think the volume of what was coming in and the interest was great because of social media because of the fact that I was not just British and that unfortunately, if members of his family say, ‘Well, this is what’s happened to all of us,’ if they can compare the experience I went through with similar to what has been shared with us: Kate was called ‘Waity Katie,’ waiting to marry William [for nine years] while I imagine that was really hard—and I do, I can’t picture what that felt like—this is not the same. And if a member of his family will comfortably say we’ve all had to do with things that are rude, rude and racist are not the same. And equally, you’ve also had a press team that goes on the record to defend you especially when they know something’s not true and that didn’t happen for us.”
